The example in section 4.6.5 of the Learning Manual might be a good starting point.

\tweak may be the command you need. Have a look at section 4.1.4 Tweaking methods in the Learning Manual for release 2.11 to see why this is needed and how to use it. The explanation there applies just as well to release 2.10. However, I believe it is not possible to use \tweak in a variable, so
this might not be quite the answer you want.

You can, however, use \tweak in a music function, can't you?
