I started getting this message:

try this
with \f before \> \p

\midi { }
}
and without dynamics
\score {
{ b8 a4.\> ^"rit." r8 f8 \! e f }
\midi { }
}
return not programming error :-)
You must specified a volume (dynamics) with logique (de)crescendo
