No, it's "die Hosen" originally, plural, from English "hoses"; "a
pair of trousers" = "ein Paar Hosen".
"Das Mädchen" is neuter because of her diminuitive ("die Maid").
But in contemporary German you're right.
I find much more illogical that the sun is feminine and the moon is
masculine in German. ;-)
