The reason I was forced to learn about this technique (it's a program
for processing PDF files, not a LaTeX macro) is that I was doing
a trifold brochure, and having the hardest time getting it to set the
columns so that the brochure would fold right.  I think getting two
columns to fold right is an easier problem, but I still find this more
straightforward.  LaTeX seems to understand the concept that "The
page is this size" better than the concept, "There are two columns on
this page".
