Wow: I just realised the implication of the issue Papazian brought up...
If you can't use
\set Staff.instr = "whatever"
mid-stream to change the instrument name listed at the left-hand side
of the system, how do you keep track of the instrument being played
by doublers/triplers/etc. (e.g., when the clarinet player takes up
the bass clarinet)?
I now think this is a more serious issue than it first appeared --
but maybe there's a trivial solution I don't know about?
[FWIW, I tried \stopStaff \set... \startStaff, but it didn't seem to
work...]
