I have now removed the old installation completely and I get:

I have removed those directories and have installed. Why has the
installation moved from /usr/local to home directory?
Because you're not installing as root.
Ooooops!
I now have 2.9.1 installed and it works. I see I am now warned about
the font cache rebuild for the home directory. I will clean up the
double install and see what happens.
