This is a different machine (i386) with a new installation of Debian sid that has not run Lily yet.

ldd -v `which lilypond` gives:

not a dynamic executable.

I'm looking for the output of the binary which will be in /usr/local/lilypond/usr/bin/lilypond

preferably with LD_LIBRARY_PATH setting done by /usr/local/bin/lilypond

ldd looks fine.

what kind of machine is this (CPU)? Can you run lilypond in GDB, and send a backtrace of the exception?

thanks.
