I noticed that too, and I'd tend to consider this as a bug. And there is also the "reverse" behaviour: Blank spaces at the beginning or end of double-quoted strings are trimmed. This was reported in http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2005-11/msg00277.html but I didn't get any reply to confirm the bug.
