Josh,

When I try your example, it doesn't work, in part, because you force the
system count to 1, so the line of music is more crowded than lilypond's
desired spacing.

You can shorten the space taken by multimeasure rests a little bit, by
setting the Staff.MultiMeasureRest.space-increment.  When I set it less
than 0.8, the change is imperceptible to my eye.

Are you making this example on a landscape page?
