Apply an articulation to all notes inside a context

Wondering how to accomplish the subject line.

Basically, if I could take something like

4-. 4-. 4-. 4-. 4-. 4-. 4-. 4-.

and turn it into something like

\staccato {
  4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4
}

that would be ideal! (sim. is not appropriate)
