I may be misinterpreting you but I can reproduce the desired beaming

Yes, that's true, and I've used this in the past. But, to be honest, I
think this is, while shorter than my original version, also uglier,
since it introduces an element of asymmetry between the two two-note
beam groups. I remember thinking to myself: Which of those groups should
I mark with [ ] now?
Also, it remains true that I have to specify an ending to a beam
manually where I'd actually like just to mark the point of splitting.
