Well I know of a few people who prefer it that way but I dislike it. If you want it, you can get it with using \autoBeamOff and adding manual beams. I am using \melisma ... \melismaEnd, perhaps there is a way to redefine \melisma/\melismaEnd to be "["/"]" used for the manual beaming thingies or someting similar. In one file I just enter only (mostly) the music, and in the other how the music is to be displayed, such a redefinition could help you getting what you want without changing the "music" file and in such a way have different "presentation" files to satiate different tastes. Currently I'm using it to be able to have versions different clefs, staffsize, choise of voices etc. e.g. a choir score, a conductor score in sounding pitches, or intrument scores in their native pitch.
