Darn it, you are right.  I misremembered: please disregard the comment.
Here is the breakdown:

\hide (transparent) retains the stencil's dimensions
Overriding with point-stencil retains a single invisible point and thus
the padding.
\omit (overriding with empty-stencil) retains nothing that padding could
attach to.
