I like this. However I do have two questions.  I notice this comment.

So that would explain why when I try a \relative scale it throws an error.  So \relative mode does not create an elements field?

Also, does anyone know of something similar for chordmode?  There are times when I may have for example three sets of notes, chords, and lyrics and the last set may drop or change the last one or two chords.  What I normally do is create two variables containing the primary set and one having the final one or two chords.  Then I merge them for the first two verses.  It seems like it would be more convenient to have something that can split off parts of a chordmode.

But it is not a huge deal for the most part so I'm just curious.
