You got your question answered by another use already, so I'll just add that typesetters will usually tend to give punctuation the shape of the word adjacent to it for typographical rather than logical wholesomeness. That LilyPond makes it programmatically awkward to change shape without intervening space is not intentional; rather it is a side effect from punctuation usually being placed immediately adjacent to the preceding word. -- David Kastrup
