Since version 2.24, `\alternative` is not limited to the end of a repeat. You 
can use

```
\version "2.24.1"

{
  \repeat volta 2 {
    \alternative {
      \volta 1 {
        c'1
      }
      \volta 2 {
        d'1
      }
    }
    e'1
  }
}
```

Note that the legacy syntax `\repeat volta x { ... } \alternative { ... }` is 
not
encouraged anymore, the syntax `\repeat volta x { ... \alternative { ... } }` is
preferred now.
