Can you run lilypond itself? Make a small test file -- there's some on the website, or take an example from the docs, or something, and try compiling that.
If you've just finished doing the "gmake", then you need to do "gmake install" to actually install lilypond. To uninstall it -- say, if you want to upgrade lilypond -- then
