Indeed, \alternative with more repeated music after it was added in 2.23.
But you don't need to compile LilyPond yourself to install 2.23. Download
it from here:
https://lilypond.org/development.html
and see here on how to install it:
https://lilypond.org/doc/v2.23/Documentation/learning/graphical-setup-under-gnu_002flinux
These binaries are standalone. They won't interfere with what your
system package manager installs.
