No, you don't, but a lot of Debian users get pretty good at
installing/de-installing Debian packages, but never install anything any
other way. One advantage of making a new user for any "exceptional"
versions of software is that everything else in the system behaves as
before. You can mess around with the software as much as you like and
when you have finished with it delete the user from the system and all
the user's files.
