I don't know any details about the SuSE 9.3 system or the corresponding LilyPond package, but on many systems, the lilypond package will install a file called lilypond-profile or lilypond-profile.sh or lilypond.sh or something similar in /etc/profile.d/, which means that it is sourced automatically when you login to the system. This file should set TEXMF correctly.
ok, /etc/profile.d/ exist, but no lilypond* there or in /etc whatsoever.
but there is a /etc/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf that does a lot of TEXMF* and specifically:
TEXMF = {$TEXMFHOME,!!$TEXMFSYSCONFIG,!!$TEXMFSYSVAR,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFDIST,!!/usr/share/lilypond/2.4.4}
but now im in deep water, im not used to mess around in these areas... so what im supposed to do with this file i have no clue.
/Bo
