Probably because I am not yet sufficiently familiar with the use and
interaction of the different programming levels of LilyPond. It's not a
matter of being unable to understand (I started programming in 1967, and
it was my career from 1970 to 2004, when I moved into systems and
network management) - it's just that LilyPond is a complex system,
logically designed, to be sure, but in each layer there are an
incredible number of options to become familiar with, and to be frank,
at my age taking everything in and memorising it is slower and less
certain than it used to be.

Your example is indeed simple; I shall use it to understand how it is
working at the depth I need to. I am never satisfied to do things by
rote - I need to understand how and why before I accept an answer.

Thanks,
Paul
