Please, Sean always tell what version of LilyPond you are using and please Jonatan, always tell what version of LilyPond the solution works with.
To avoid confusion, I can tell you both that the function make-circle-stencil was introduced in version 2.5.19 and is not available in any stable version (which probably is what Sean has installed).

bartok = ^\markup \bartokpizz %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
And then just prepend \bartok to the notes that should have bartok pizzicatto.
