The TeX Gyre font project was started in 2006 to provide high-quality, free-licensed replacements for existing URW fonts: http://www.gust.org.pl/projects/e-foundry/tex-gyre/nfp11.pdf Its adoption in LilyPond was discussed from 2008 onwards, but took more than seven years to finally be committed.
