But can't you simply hide the staff? See NR for 2.19.82 Section 1.6.2, subsection Hiding Staves. [Works in earlier lilypond versions as well.] "Staff lines can be hidden by removing the Staff_symbol_engraver from the Staff context. As an alternative, \stopStaff may be used.
