Dear David, I might be wrong, but I think it is some font problem. Everything else seems to work. Besides the short staff lines that drawn correctly once there is music, the example by you works for all of us who replied.
I don't know the answer, but it might help to know: Which operating system? Are you using 2.19.81 as indicated? Is it with a particular custom music font or with the default font? SVG or PDF output?
