I have run into the same issue. Unfortunately I cannot locate the command in my "cheat sheet." It has to do with resetting the first beat of the next measure. Perhaps this description shall allow more experienced the divine the terminology.

You are almost certainly looking for what’s called an upbeat or anacrusis, and which is achieved in LilyPond using the \partial command.
