I would like to know that too. You can make good ones with code page 437, and there is a font from IBM that's free to use, so that could presumably be done using \verbatim somehow. That would use minimal memory and have much less file size increase than with images, It should be very easy but I don't have the faintest idea how to put that together. If you want black blobs, you could make them with noteedit, screen capture as pngs, and insert those. Noteedit's diagrammer is really quick and easy to use.
