From the 18thC to mid-20thC writers inserted apostrophes where Scots didn't have a consonant that English does. For instance the English word "give" is equivalent to the Scots word "gie". The apologetic apostrophe would render this "gi'e" but this is now frowned upon. REgards, Martin
