Have you looked at the LSR? There are lots of examples/snippets showing how to 
customize metronome marks.
For example, the hits given by <http://lsr.di.unimi.it/LSR/Search?q=tempo> and 
<http://lsr.di.unimi.it/LSR/Search?q=metronome>.
