Thanks for that. I can now see why searching on
lilypond lsr arrows over notes
didn't hit this item.

Looking at the snippit with its more handsome arrow, I can see
the sense in Pierre's suggestion of using bowing marks; they're
more distinguishable from each other (if these markings are important).

Funnily enough, the default positioning of (my) arrows in 2.18.2
made them very clear: the *tail ends* of the arrows were aligned.
