Ah, it was the other way round. When autoBeaming is off, then manual beams are consulted for syllable lengths. So if you have to beam manually anyway, switching the autobeamer off completely makes lyrics entry simpler:
{ \autoBeamOff g'8[ ais'] b'[ cis''] d''2 } \addlyrics { tro -- ve -- rĂ². }
