I’ve always used \alternative with a list of bracketed elements, and just found
that example in the Notation Reference:

\accidentalStyle forget

\accidentalStyle modern
#})
{
\accidentalStyle modern
\time 2/4
\repeat volta 2 {
c'2
}
\alternative {
cis'
\forget c'
}
}
% to be compared with this:
{
\accidentalStyle modern
\time 2/4
\repeat volta 2 {
c'2
}
\alternative {
{
cis'
\forget c'
}
}
}
