Hi Mark, I guess it means "not seriously, like a folk song, much lighter than a Beethoven piece". My personal opinion. The whole variations are pretty funny ( http://petrucci.mus.auth.gr/imglnks/usimg/2/28/IMSLP51439-PMLP16877-WoO_73.pdf ).
