You are right of course. I should have >tested< before writing. I learned only recently, I can use \skip instead of " " or _ in lyrics. The manual does not mention it. I wrongly assumed it to behave identically, as skip notes also generate staff lines.
Yes, they normally do, but you can easily change that behaviour, for example in orchestral scores, see http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.2/Documentation/user/out-www/lilypond/Hiding-staves.html This is exactly the same mechanism that's used in lyrics by default.
