Hi Karl, perhaps I just don't get your point. But sometimes it helps if you don't insist on a particular way of solving a problem but rather describe the problem/the goal and be open for the best solution.
A bar is not an object on itself but it is there because there is music between two points in time. Then LilyPond will put the barlines etc. to represent the bar on paper. So what is the point of having a bar and hiding it? For your question LilyPond has many clever ways to define the length of hairpins. But adding more music and then not showing it seems like a strange workaround for hairpin placement.
