Answering my own question here, the \shapeII function in the openlilylib repository does the trick (and many other astounding tricks as well, by the way).
Note that the current code is somewhat dated, and will not work with 2.19.28 or similar recent versions. Simon Albrecht has made a fine fix and it is waiting on a pull request to be incorporated.
