Well, it turns out that I confused the context specification given to \accidentalStyle (which means where it is applied) with internal context arguments to add-accidentals-properties (which specify the context for which any printed accidental will be considered relevant). I implemented the \accidentalStyle syntax so one should hope that I had understood what it was useful for. No such luck.
