I little trip to "man" gave me the solution ("man dvips").If anyone else has a problem with the paper size switching to U.S. letter, dvips is set to U.S. letter by default. You have to type "dvips -t a4 -Ppdf -u +lilypond filename" to get a proper a4 .pdf file.
