LilyPond is one of these programs where you cannot expect to do anything useful without reading the manual, at least the Tutorial. Also, it's very different from most programs you have seen before in Windows. You may want to take a look at the links from http://lilypond.org/web/switch/ to get a better idea. Finally, I hope you have seen the instructions on how to test your installation at http://lilypond.org/web/download/windows.html
