Looks a lot like the way I do things; I'll often do stuff like:
c4-\markup{\italic{\dynamic{p} dolce}}
Only trouble is, Lilypond doesn't know that this is in fact a dynamic,
so if I have a crescendo nearby it won't line up like it should...
