If you search the mailing list archives, you will, for example, find http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2003-10/msg00244.html and if you search the "Regression test" document on the documentation web site, you will find http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.0/input/regression/out-www/collated-files.html#new-markup-syntax.ly which illustrates both how to typeset dynamics with \markup and how to stack several lines of markup text. Don't forget to browse through the Tips and Tricks document once in a while also.
