I recommend to take a look at the example http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.0/input/test/out-www/collated-files.html#incipit.ly To make the time signature invisible instead of the clef, just replace Clef by TimeSignature in the property setting involving transparent. Actually, you don't need the \encincipit macro which includes some tricks to typeset the clef, but if you are curious about how it's done, it's defined in /usr/share/lilypond/*/ly/property-init.ly

I've got the empty measure and the text done (though the text is longer than the measure), how do I get rid of the time signature?
