What you should do first and foremost is read - the installation manual,
the tutorial, and virtually everything else on
http://www.lilypond.org.   The fact that you tried to run the 'lilypond'
command tells us that you likely did not read much.  If you think your
installation was successful, then you need to work through the tutorial.

If you want the people in the Lilypond User community to help, you will
need to let us know:

- What operating system you are using?
- If a Windows operating system, how did your Cygwin install work?
- Did you install all the prerequisites?  Were there problems or error
messages?
- The version of Lilypond?
- The actual command you used, and possibly snippets of the input
file(s)
