Also, there a bug in the latest stable versions 1.6.x. If you try to use the Type1 (vectorized) fonts instead of the default Type3 (bitmapped) fonts, the wrong fonts will be shown in the Postscript or PDF. I think that's what happened to you. The simple solution, if you just want a PS file to view and print, is to use ly2dvi -P myfile.ly instead of ly2dvi -p myfile.ly since it will use the Type3 fonts instead.
The problem is solved in the latest CVS version of the 1.6.x series, I'm eagerly for Han-Wen or Jan to make an official 1.6.8 release.
Another alternative is to download the *.pfa and lilypond.map files for the development version, which work correctly. See the instructions at http://www.s3.kth.se/~mabe/lilypond/
