Is it possible to put arbitrary chord names onto a chord staff? There are lots of different conventions for chord names out there and lilypond conforms to just a few. Personally I don't mind if midi isn't generated because lilypond can't work out what notes correspond to my "arbitrary" chord name - I would just like to have nice neat chord names above the staff.
