Strange! This looks exactly the way it should. Both dvips and xdvi should use the $TEXPSHEADERS variable as set in texmf.cnf to search for this file. Also, if the kpsewhich command finds the file, it should also be found by dvips and xdvi. Try the following: Set the environment variable KPATHSEA_DEBUG to '-1' Run dvips on the .dvi file and pipe the standard error output through 'grep music-drawing'.
