News vs. listserver

I wonder if you guys have ever discussed setting up a news groups (e.g. alt.music.lilypond or something like that) as an alternative to mail groups that we are using. The newsgroup is cleaner since it does fill you inbox folder and you can quickly see the email chaing since they appear like nested.   Any comment ?   Thanks   Carlos
