Git problem

I've had occasional problems with my Ubuntu "build" machine locking up, and 
have been forced to power it off.  I now get this when I run any git 
commands:

fatal: object 55f8a6159da6e7f1e93b87da61534528d441af97 is corrupted
Is there a way of recovering from this, or should I nuke my lilypond-git 
folder and start again?
