It works well (I use it in a VM on both a Windows 7 and a Mac 10.5.x using Virtuabox).
I *only* use it for Lilypond work and while I have gotten compilation to work on later versions of Ubuntu (I haven't tried fedora) there is no need to really upgrade from 9.0.4 if all you are doing is LilyPond dev work work at least from my own experience.
