I just tried factorizing French macro definitions using @ifXXX blocks, @set and @alias, but I got a stack overflow with TeX when attempting to generate the PDF manuals, so we won't do this until Texinfo is well-defined as a language with that much flexibility and reliability whatever the output format is.
